The Redbone Coonhound is one of America's most striking and soulful hunting breeds — a large, powerful scent hound developed in the American South, most closely associated with the Appalachian and Ozark mountain regions, where it was bred to track and tree raccoon, bear, mountain lion, and deer through rugged terrain in all weather conditions. The breed traces its roots to Foxhounds brought to America by Scottish and Irish immigrants in the late 18th century, with the deep red mahogany coat — the breed's most defining visual characteristic — believed to have been refined through crosses with Bloodhounds and other red-coated hounds. The Redbone's coat is a rich, deep red that is virtually uniform across the body, sometimes with small white markings on the chest and feet. The breed's voice is one of its most celebrated traits — a deep, melodious, ringing bay that carries for miles through mountain hollows and river bottoms, allowing hunters to track the dog's progress through dense forest by sound alone. The Redbone Coonhound gained wide cultural recognition through Wilson Rawls' beloved 1961 novel Where the Red Fern Grows, in which the two central dogs — Old Dan and Little Ann — are Redbone Coonhounds. The breed was recognized by the AKC in 2009. Our collection celebrates this iconic American hunting hound with original artwork across 200+ USA-made home décor and gift products.
